Rana Almassmoum
Rana is in the marine studies program at Oregon State University. Following her interests in marine science, she participated in the URSA Engage research program. In the lab, Rana processed mussel samples and identified dozens of species of macroinvertebrates. She presented her poster on relationships between mussel habitat complexity and macroinvertebrate diversity at the 2023 SACNAS National Diversity in STEM Conference and the 2023 Celebrating Undergraduate Excellence Symposium.

Jacob Robertson
Jacob graduated in 2024 from the biology program at Oregon State University. As a post-baccalaureate researcher, Jacob helped to conduct field work for the long-term rocky intertidal succession experiment. He also presented his poster on the relationships between upwelling and mussel and barnacle recruitment on the Oregon coast at the 2024 Western Society of Naturalists Meeting. He is currently applying to graduate programs in marine ecology.

Lily Miksell
Lily recently graduated with a BS in biology from Oregon State University. While at OSU, she participated in research through the Summer Undergraduate Research Experience and work-study programs. She was partially funded by the Alexei Lubchenco Menge Undergraduate Research Fellowship. In the field, Lily helped to monitor the mussel-surfgrass interaction experiment. Her lab work focused on identifying the numerous invertebrates that live in mussel beds and surfgrass meadows. After OSU, Lily worked as a pathology lab assistant with Legacy Health in Portland.

Emily Van Belle
Emily recently finished her BS in biology with an option in ecology at Oregon State University. She participated in research through the Summer Undergraduate Research Experience and URSA Engage programs, and enjoyed spending time on the Oregon coast while growing as a researcher. During her time in URSA, she worked on the benthic-pelagic coupling project by processing invertebrate samples in the lab and learning how to analyze data. Through SURE she helped to install and monitor the mussel-surfgrass interaction experiment. Emily is currently an intern with the Institute for Marine Research in the Philippines.

Elyse Shanley & Emily Cook
Elyse and Emily are pursuing their BS degrees in biology at Oregon State University. They both participated in research through the URSA Engage program. As members of the benthic-pelagic coupling project, Elyse and Emily became experts at identifying larval and juvenile barnacles.
